Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Tax Credits
This is the largest tax credit program for technology development in Canada. It is used by more than 20,000 businesses and distributes annually at least $3 billion in tax credits at the federal level, and several hundred million dollars at the Quebec level.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is responsible for administering the program at the federal level. Several provinces, including Quebec and Ontario, also offer similar incentive programs for investing in research and development. Each government has its own methods and credit rates. Only the CRA has the staff to assess the technical eligibility of projects for SR&ED.
In Quebec, the SR&ED tax credit is called the CRIC (Crédit d’impôt pour la recherche, l’innovation et la commercialisation). The CRIC represents a small broadening of eligible activities compared to the SR&ED Tax Credit. To be eligible for the CRIC Tax Credit, pre-commercialization activities must be a continuation of R&D work carried out in Quebec by the company or on its behalf.
